The size corresponds to the size of the JW Hol-ee Roller/Football, i.e. size S is intended for the Hol-ee Roller/Football size S. You can always put a smaller size in a larger ball, but not a larger size in a smaller ball. The choice of size depends on how much you want the crinkle to fill out the ball. This toy will not fit in the Mini size of JW Hol-ee balls.
